Jesus, A Man of His Word (Matthew 5:33-37)

Phill Howell, May 27, 2018
Part of the The Gospel According to Matthew series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

This week's message covers Jesus' words about oaths and vows. The summary of what Jesus is doing is forbidding the manipulation of religious and legal speech. The reason he forbids this is because the need to give an oath often disrespects God's honor and it comes from an evil heart. The solution to this problem is the gospel. We need our hearts changed and to be in awe of God's grace and majesty. More specifically we should be in awe of God's grace to make promises, confirm them with an oath and then Jesus confirm those promises by taking an oath that leads to his death on the cross. This message transforms and heals the brokenness of our hearts.
