A Song For Thirsty Souls
The Songs of Our Savior
Scripture/Text: Psalm 143; This week's sermon on Psalm 143 emphasizes that righteousness must reign through three essential elements: 1) A Righteous God; 2) A Righteous King; and 3) A Righteous People. David's prayer isn't merely for personal rescue from enemies, but for God's righteousness and justice to fill the earth through his role as servant king. However, David acknowledges in verse 2 that no human (not even the king himself) is righteous enough to stand before God's judgment, pointing forward to the need for a greater King. God's word reveals in the New Testament that the greater David is Jesus Christ, who perfectly embodied God's righteousness, stretched out his hands on the cross in substitutionary suffering, and through his death and resurrection became the righteous King who offers both justice and mercy to sinners. Therefore, this passages calls believers to submit to Christ as King, root their prayer lives and emotional expectations in God's faithful promises rather than personal desires, and slow down to meditate on God's character and works. In this way Psalm 143 can become an anthem of worship for 21st century Christians, but only if we trust in God's righteous character and find our righteousness through faith in Jesus.
